As school returns to session, our museum invites visitors to take a trip
back in time to schools at the end of the 1800s.  At that time, school was
in session just three months out of a year.  By the 1920s, schools were in
session six months per year.  The slate chalk board seen at left, a part of
our collection, and ink well are original pieces from a typical school in the
late 1800s.  The desk is original from the Pineville School.  We have a
complete collection of historic school books, many of which are original
to the Calico Rock School.

These are just some of the items in our collection studies by teachers
from Calico Rock Public Schools as part of their Arkansas History
inservice program on Monday, August 16.

We are expanding our
museum into the adjacent

Located in the basement of our new building, there is a wall made of
stone that appears to be different than the stone used to build the main
structure.  The end of the wall (left of photo) is different still with concrete
covering the majority of the stone structure like plaster.  Behind this wall,
the space between it and the building structure wall appears to be filled
with dirt and small pebbles.  From the first day we toured the building,
this wall was a mystery.  Why have a walled off section of the basement
when clearly there was no structural purpose for it?

A few weeks later, we were told a story handed down generations that a
building on upper Main Street had a basement with a cave that had been
walled off.  The cave was supposedly used for the Underground Railroad.
